About ESISS

ESISS is the EMMAN Shared Information Security Service. It is a shared service initial setup with a grant from HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England) and entered production service in August 2009. Shared Services concepts are promoted by the government as a means of improving the quality and cost effectiveness of public services.

ESISS developed from an initial response to the HEFCE shared services: invitation to submit expressions of interest in 2007. A HEFCE funded feasibility study running from October 2007 until submission May 2008 was then carried out. The feasibility study included business plan development and specialist VAT & financial advice for EMMAN (East Midlands Metropolitan Area Network) Ltd. The University of Nottingham, Loughborough University, the University of Derby, the University of Lincoln, the Nottingham Trent University and De Montfort University all collaborated in this study.

EMMAN awarded Loughborough University, via due competitive process, the contract to deliver this UK Shared Information Security Service. Loughborough IT Services already has a national and European reputation in the areas of roaming and wireless network technology

Loughborough University is one of the country’s leading universities, highly regarded, justifiably proud of its many achievements and secured the prestigious University of the Year by the Sunday Times for 2008/09.

The shared Information Security service is provided from within the Network & Security team within Loughborough University, managed by Matthew Cook. The team of 13 IT professionals underpin the IT Infrastructure of the University providing a stable, secure and flexible network delivery platform.

All team members of ESISS are currently qualified to the TigerScheme (http://www.tigerscheme.org/) QSTM (Qualified Security Tester – Team Member) level, equivalent to CHECK team member/CREST Registered Tester, and also hold a number of other IT qualifications (including CISSP, CCNA, CCNP, CCSP). ESISS is also Trusted Introducer Accredited (https://www.trusted-introducer.org/teams/esiss.html). Trusted Introducer is the trusted backbone of the Security and Incident Response Team community in Europe.
